We all know that a job interview can be a daunting experience and if you are not prepared it may prevent your chances of getting that dream job. Here we present 5 top tips to guide you through the interview process.

1. As the old saying goes ‘if you fail to plan, then you plan to fail’ and in this case it couldn’t be more true. Just pitching up to a job interview with little to no knowledge of the company who you’re applying for employment with is a disaster waiting to happen. Get to know the organisation, a little bit about their history and what their objectives are. It is more or less guaranteed that they will ask the inevitable ‘what do you know about us?’, so be prepared and respond with confidence when the query presents itself.

2. Remember it is always better to wait for something than arrive late and not be able to get it, so always be punctual. If you have a long way to travel to an interview then get there as early as you have to in order to guarantee being on time. It’s always better to sit and have a coffee for 30 minutes somewhere near the interview than to be late.

3. Although job interviews vary in structure and formality, there will always be recurring themes and opportunities for self-promotion. Interviewers need to know about you and who you are, where your strengths lie, any perceived weaknesses you feel you may have and what measures you have taken to improve in those areas. Any relative achievements should be introduced at a time that feels appropriate within the interview, always be prepared for any questions related to your experience and previous work history.

4. You should always attend an interview looking smart and professional whatever the post may be, its shows you are a conscientious person who takes a serious approach to employment. Have a happy positive demeanour and good body language, an all-round positive attitude will go a long way to making a good first impression.

5. Before any interview, research the role thoroughly and have a list of points you would like to go through with the interviewers concerning the role. This will show your interest in the job and that you are passionate about what you do. Remember to relax, ask any questions at appropriate moments and try your best to be positive at all times during the interview, you have a lot to offer and the interviewer wants to see it, so be natural and be yourself.
